For our National Program Office in Cameroon, we are looking for three (03) Business and Industries Assistants, who will facilitate the development, refinement and implementation of the strategic approach of the

WWF concerning the development of agro-industries, the exploitation and exploration of extractive industries in Cameroon.

Location : Yaoundé/Mintom/Yokadouma

Field of action : Landscape of TRIDOM

Duration : 24 Months




Main duties

Within the framework of the WWF Regional Strategic Plan and the CCPO Strategic Plan for 2022-2026, the B&I Assistant will facilitate the development, refinement and implementation of WWF’s strategic approach to agribusiness development, exploitation and exploration of extractive industries in Cameroon.

Main responsibilities

  • Commitment:  Promote, develop and strengthen relationships at higher levels with relevant ministries (e.g. agriculture, mining, economy and planning, forestry, environment, …), private sector (mining and oil companies, large agricultural companies and Chinese extractive and infrastructure companies), the donor community (especially the World Bank, AfDB, COMIFAC and other CCPM members.. .) and national NGOs, with regard to the development of businesses and industries in Cameroon;
  • Work with agro-industrial companies, smallholder cocoa farmers on how they can optimize the management of biodiversity areas in their plantation landscapes and reduce deforestation;
  • In collaboration with the regional coordinator for palm oil, and in consultation with the food practice team, facilitate collaboration and coordination with companies, the government of Cameroon, investors, NGOs and other parties stakeholders, including RSPO roadshow organisations, to increase uptake of RSPO requirements in the country;
  • Particular emphasis will be placed on the effective implementation of the MOMO4C and GCLP programs while working with relevant stakeholders to develop best practices/certification system for other relevant commodities (rubber, cocoa etc…) in Cameroon ;
  • Oversee the proper implementation of the regional palm oil strategy in Cameroon to ensure sustainable palm oil production in Cameroon;
  • Capacity building/support: Support the Government of Cameroon in putting in place the conditions for a sustainable commercial and industrial sector (including effective legislation); promote education and awareness on best practices for managing the negative impacts of the extractive sector in a context of sustainable land use management;
  • Communication.   Ensure appropriate flow of information between and among key stakeholders, including WWF country office staff, regional focal point, local communities, civil society and key decision makers, in line with the strategic plan.   Build a strong information network at local and national level, supporting international communications where necessary, in coordination with the regional focal point;
  • Regional collaboration: actively participate in the regional B&I team; share information and experiences and coordinate actions; assist in the development of a regional program and network;
  • Monitoring, Investigation and Reporting: Track existing and emerging developments relevant to the development of the extractive industry in Cameroon; facilitate fact-finding missions to the field, emphasizing the engagement of local civil society, and reporting to national and regional management;
  • Promotion of standards and tools: Track Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEAs) associated with key projects and locations identified as appropriate.



 

Landscape-level specific tasks

With a focus on agro-industries, mining and associated infrastructure development in the Southern and Eastern regions and the greater TRIDOM INTERZONE:

  • Introduce the relevant technical contributions of the “extractive sectors” into the national land-use planning process;
  • Raise awareness and train civil society to play a leading role in engaging the private sector around environmental best practices, biodiversity conservation, social safeguards and corporate footprint, etc.; as well as a major role in policy and advocacy;
  • Work closely with the TRIDOM manager and team for the development and implementation of climate resilient case studies (MoMO4C, GCLP, APOI and other related projects and partners);
  • Work closely with the Kudu Zombo manager and team for the implementation of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) recommendations for palm oil development by CAMVERT;
  • Support, with the TRIDOM team, the establishment of a multi-stakeholder platform, bringing together representatives of the private sector, economic and political actors active in TRIDOM, conservation organizations and government representatives, in order to discuss and plan how to organize the most effective “cohabitation” between extractive activities and conservation in the TRIDOM interzone.

Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of agronomy, agribusiness, agroforestry, business development or a related field;
  • At least 03 years of experience within a project team;
  • Adapted to rural life;
  • Understanding of forest and wildlife policy, and natural resource management principles;
  • Excellent people skills, diplomacy and conflict resolution skills to manage complex and highly sensitive situations involving multiple stakeholders;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Fluency in French or English;
  • Quick mind; ability to react under pressure;
  • Aligns and identifies with the core values ​​of the WWF organization: Courage, Integrity, Respect and Collaboration.
