Recruitment of 6 team leaders for wildlife inventories
1. Context
Cameroon is home to exceptional biodiversity, particularly in the
Southeast forest landscape, where several protected areas and hunting interest zones are located. However, this biodiversity is threatened by poaching, deforestation, logging and human-wildlife
conflicts . In this context, Noé is implementing, in partnership with Nature+, the NaturaSudEst Sustainable Territories – Conservation project in Forest Management Units (UFA), Hunting Interest Zones (ZIC) and Community-Managed Hunting Interest Zones (ZICGC) on the outskirts of Lobéké National Park. This project, funded by the European Union (EU), aims to strengthen inclusive biodiversity conservation by actively involving local communities in natural resource management. One of the major axes of the project is the establishment of an ecological monitoring system, in order to: Assess the state of biodiversity, in particular populations of large and medium-sized mammals, as well as the evolution of natural habitats; Implement a system for collecting and analyzing data on fauna and flora, using modern tools such as camera traps, GPS and SMART surveys; Monitor the impact of human activities (logging, hunting, agriculture) on ecosystems and propose appropriate management measures;2 Understand and mitigate human-wildlife conflicts, which represent a major issue for the cohabitation between local populations and wildlife. A wildlife inventory will take place at the beginning of the project, based on distance sampling, both with linear pedestrian transects and camera traps (Camera Traps Distance Sampling). The inventories are carried out by different teams for which six team leaders are sought. 2. Missions and responsibilities Under the responsibility of the Ecological Monitoring Manager, in close collaboration with the Project Coordinator, the team leaders will have the main role of supervising the field teams and ensuring the proper execution of activities in the areas targeted by the project. Their missions will be: A. Implementation of wildlife inventories 1. Coordinate and supervise wildlife inventory campaigns in the field; 2. Rigorously apply ecological monitoring methodologies, including:
o Linear walking transects to record direct observations and
indirect signs of wildlife species and human impacts;
o Camera Trap Distance Sampling for the assessment of mammal populations;
o GIS surveys and mapping for habitat monitoring; 3. Ensure the collection, organization and transmission of data to the Ecological
Monitoring Manager ; 4. Train and supervise the members of the field team (local guides, trackers, technical assistants); B. Management and coordination of field teams 1. Organize the planning and logistics of field missions (travel, equipment, stock management); 2. Ensure the distribution of tasks and the daily management of the teams under their responsibility 3. Ensure compliance with safety protocols and working instructions in forest environments; 4. Ensure regular communication with the base during field missions using satellite communication devices (satellite phone, Garmin InReach);3 5. Ensure that ethical standards are respected by all team members to ensure minimal intervention of teams in nature (avoid unnecessary destruction of vegetation, respect hygiene rules, avoid waste, etc.); 6. Ensure that all team members use and handle equipment appropriately . C. Data Analysis and Reporting 1. Ensure that data are collected in accordance with the protocol and the highest scientific standards; 2. Participate in the processing and preliminary analysis of data before their transmission to the Ecological Monitoring Manager; 3. Write activity reports and contribute to the development of technical reports for the project; D. Outreach and Collaboration with Local Communities 1.
