08 WCS Light Vehicle (LV) Drivers, North Cameroon Landscape
Context :
WCS is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in 1895 with the aim of safeguarding wild species and spaces throughout the world through scientific research, conservation actions, education and awareness of the values of nature, the training of conservation professionals and the development of many management tools in partnership with other organizations in the conservation world. Through its involvement in more than 350 projects, its presence in more than 60 countries and its contribution to the establishment of nearly 150 protected areas around the world, WCS has brought together ecological knowledge, the cultural experiences and partnerships necessary to enable the coexistence of wild species and habitats and local communities and to reconcile the conservation of biodiversity and socio-economic development. WCS has been present in Cameroon since 1988 and has contributed to the creation and management of numerous protected areas including the Bouba Ndjidda National Park.
Bouba Ndjidda National Park was created by Order No. 120/SEDR of December 5, 1968. It covers an area of 220,000 ha in the North Region, Mayo Rey Department and is spread over the districts of Tcholliré, Rey Bouba and Madingring. It is part of the complex of protected areas of the North with the national parks of Bénoué and Faro. It is adjacent to the Sena-Oura National Park in Chad and forms with the latter the Binational Sena-Bouba-Ndjidda complex whose acronym is BSB-Yamoussa. All these projects are part of the Northern Cameroon Landscape.
As part of the strengthening of its management capacities, WCS is looking for the services of a Light Vehicle (VL) Driver.
Purpose of the position:
The LV driver will provide logistical support by driving light vehicles (LV) for the implementation of the WCS BSB Yamoussa project in the National Parks of Bouba Ndjidda (Cameroon) and Sena Oura (Chad). He/she will be based in Garoua and the parks ensuring the proper driving of the vehicle, transporting people and WCS goods. Specifically, he/she will take care of the driving, safety and preventive and curative maintenance of the vehicle made available to him/her as well as ensuring the safety of these people and property on board this vehicle. Also, he is responsible for the administrative documents of the vehicle and ensures that these documents are always up to date, and must be able to provide immediate solutions to operational problems or solicit the right people for help.
Hierarchical position:
The VL driver will have the Versatile Logistician Assistant as his superior.
Main activities
The list is not exhaustive and will evolve according to the priorities of the WCS organization:
Responsibilities:
– Ensure the daily maintenance of the vehicles
– Supervise vehicle repairs
– Ensure technical monitoring of oil change, technical inspection and renewal of vehicle insurance deadlines
– Fill in the vehicle’s logbooks
– Ensure the driving of the vehicle for the missions of the WCS Program in any place and in the best safety conditions
– Carry out servicing and maintenance work (eg oil change, change of brakes, etc.)
– Assist in the repair of vehicles
– Support the filing and distribution of mail (Purchase order, visa application, etc.)
– Keep a list of goods in the car (wheel wrench, spare tires, first aid box, etc.)
– Complete the Log Book systematically according to the trips made
– Regular maintenance of vehicles (washing and cleaning inside and outside)
– Regularly check the oil and fluid levels (brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolant, etc.).
– Regularly examine the condition of the mechanics and tires
– Prepare the report that triggers the fuel supply
– Fill in the breakdown declaration form at the slightest suspicion of a breakdown
– Follow the validity of insurance, vignettes, technical visit etc.
– Report any defect or accident / incident to the Polyvalent Logistics Assistant and or Logistics Officer
– Performs errands and other tasks as requested by the Supervisor
– Is responsible for transmitting the report of the personal races carried out with the car
– Accompany the staff who travel to their place of embarkation
– Follow with the protocol service (administration, logistics, program, etc.) the boarding formalities
– Refuel vehicles on Friday afternoons before the office closes.
– Ensure that the accompanied staff has all the documents required for their trip
– Carry out any activity at the request of the hierarchy
CANDIDATE PROFILE:
– Hold the CEPE or the First Certificate or any other equivalent diploma or be able to read and write;
– Have a B or BE driving licence;
– Have at least 02 (two) years of professional experience in a similar position;
– Have a good knowledge of the highway code;
– Have a good knowledge of the NGO sector and security procedures, etc.
– Having experience with NGOs would be an asset;
– Flexible, autonomous and rigorous in the organization of work;
– French/Fulfulde (mandatory) and English would be an asset.
Working conditions
- Position based in Garoua and in the BSB and Bénoué national parks with travel to be planned according to the request of the Polyvalent Logistician Assistant
- Paid annual leave
- One-year contract with the possibility of renewal based on the evaluation of the employee’s performance and the context of the project.
- A trial period of three (3) months.
Skills required
Knowledge: practical or theoretical knowledge, specific techniques or procedures (eg knowing the health and safety rules (individual and environmental).
- Proficiency in French/Fulfulde (mandatory) and English would be an asset.
Know-how: mastered experiences or practices (e.g. leading and supervising a team)
- Be punctual.
- Know how to anticipate traffic problems in the city and manage stress at the wheel.
- Have a good knowledge of driving safety rules.
Soft skills: skills and behaviors required (e.g. knowing how to manage stressful situations)
- Know how to work in a team
- Be versatile
- Know how to manage priorities
- Demonstrate flexibility
