Heavy Goods Vehicle Driver (PL) WCS Paysage Nord Cameroun (PNC)

Context :

WCS is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in 1895 with the aim of safeguarding wild species and spaces around the world through scientific research, conservation actions, education and awareness-raising on the values ​​of nature. nature, the training of conservation professionals and the development of numerous management tools in partnership with other organizations in the world of conservation. Through its involvement in more than 350 projects, its presence in more than 60 countries and its contribution to the establishment of nearly 150 protected areas around the globe, WCS has brought together the ecological knowledge, cultural experiences and partnerships necessary to enable the cohabitation between wild species and habitats and local communities and reconciling the conservation of biodiversity and socio-economic development. WCS has been present in Cameroon since 1988 and has contributed to the creation and management of numerous protected areas including the Bouba Ndjidda National Park.

 




 

The Bouba Ndjidda National Park was created by Order No. 120/SEDR of December 5, 1968. It covers an area of ​​220,000 ha in the Northern Region, Department of Mayo Rey and spreads over the districts of Tcholliré, Rey Bouba and Madingring. It is part of the Northern protected area complex with the Bénoué and Faro national parks. It adjoins the Sena-Oura National Park in Chad and forms with the latter the Binational Sena -Bouba-Ndjidda complex whose acronym is BSB-Yamoussa.

 

As part of strengthening its management capabilities, WCS is seeking the services of a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) Driver.

Objective of the position:

The VL driver will provide logistical support by driving Heavy Goods Vehicles (LP) for the implementation of the WCS North Cameroon Landscape (PNC) project in the Bouba Ndjidda (Cameroon) and Sena Oura (Chad) National Parks. He/she will be based in Garoua and the parks, ensuring the proper driving of the vehicle, transporting people and WCS goods. Specifically, he/she will be responsible for the driving, safety and preventive and curative maintenance of the vehicle made available to him/her as well as ensuring the safety of these people and property on board this vehicle. Also, he is responsible for the vehicle’s administrative documents and ensures that these documents are always up to date, and must be able to provide immediate solutions to operational problems or contact the appropriate people for assistance. 

 

 

Hierarchical position:

The grader driver will be responsible for the Logistics Manager.

Main activities
The list is not exhaustive and will evolve according to the priorities of the WCS organization:

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure daily maintenance of the grader,
  • Ensure supervision of grader repairs,
  • Ensure technical monitoring of emptying times, technical inspections and renewal of grader insurance,
  • Fill out the grader logbooks,
  • Ensure the driving of the grader, for WCS Program missions anywhere and in the best safety conditions
  • Carry out upkeep and maintenance work (eg oil change, changing brakes, etc.)
  • Assist in the repair of the grader,
  • Keep a list of goods in the grader (wheel key, spare tires, first aid box, etc.)
  • Complete the Log Book systematically according to the trips made
  • Maintain the grader regularly (washing and cleaning interior and exterior)
  • Check oil and fluid levels (brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolant, etc.) regularly.
  • Regularly examine the condition of the mechanics and tires
  • Prepare the report that triggers the fuel supply

 

  • Complete the breakdown report form at the slightest suspicion of a breakdown
  • Monitor the validity of insurance, stickers, technical inspection, etc.
  • Report any defect or accident/incident to the Logistics Officer/Fleet Officer and/or the Project Director
  • Performs other tasks as requested by the Supervisor
  • Is responsible for operating the grader for earthworks to spread and level earth, gravel and other materials to the desired level (especially in the construction and maintenance of roads and trails in parks) or for adjust the pavement layers.
  • Refuel the grader on Friday afternoons before the office closes.
  • Carry out any activity at the request of the hierarchy

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

  • Hold the CEPE or First Certificate or any other equivalent diploma or know how to read and write;
  • Have a category G driving license;
  • Have at least 05 (five) years of professional experience in a similar position;
  • Have a good knowledge of the highway code;
  • Have good knowledge of the NGO sector and security procedures, etc.
  • Having experience with NGOs would be an asset;
  • Flexible, autonomous and rigorous in the organization of work;
  • French/Fulfulde (required) and English would be an asset.

Working conditions

  • Position based at the BSB and Bénoué national parks with travel to be expected depending on the request of the Logistics Officer/Fleet Officer
  • Six (6) month seasonal contract with possibility of renewal based on employee performance evaluation and project context.

· A trial period of one (1) month.

Required skills

Knowledge: practical or theoretical knowledge, specific techniques or procedures (e.g. knowing health and safety rules (individual and environmental).

  • Fluency in French/Fulfulde (required) and English would be an asset.

Know-how:  mastered experiences or practices (e.g. leading and supervising a team)           

 

  • To be punctual.
  • Know how to anticipate traffic problems in the city and manage stress while driving.
  • Have a good knowledge of driving safety rules.

Soft skills:  required skills and behaviors (e.g. knowing how to manage stressful situations) 

 

  • Know how to work in a team                            
  • To be polyvalent                                  
  • Know how to manage priorities                               
  • Show flexibility
