USAID/Power Africa Women in the Just Energy Transition (JET) 2024

USAID/Power Africa Women in the Just Energy Transition (JET) 2024

Phase 2 targets 60 mid-career women working for municipalities across South Africa. This encompasses individuals occupying administrative or supervisory roles across diverse departments of local municipalities, including but not limited to energy, environment, planning, and public works.

The South African Government has initiated several green energy and climate management policies to solve the myriad of challenges associated with fossil fuels. However, the most ambitious of these plans is the Just Energy Transition Plan, which is based on the need to shift from fossil fuel energy to more environmentally friendly, sustainable, cleaner, and renewable energy sources.

This plan has morphed into South Africa’s Just Energy Transition Investment Plan (JET-IP) between the Government of South Africa and the Governments of Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the United States (US), and the European Union at the United Nations Frameworks Convention on Climate Change 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26).

The JET-IP objectives for South Africa are articulated in the Government Political Declaration as “to establish an ambitious long-term partnership to support South Africa’s pathway to low emissions and climate-resilient development, to accelerate the just transition and the decarbonisation of the electricity system, and to develop new economic opportunities such as green hydrogen and electric vehicles amongst other interventions to support South Africa’s shift towards a low carbon future.”

This educational training initiative will enhance women’s proficiency in renewable energy technologies, equip them with the necessary skills for energy project management, and cultivate a balanced blend of technical and interpersonal capabilities. Upon the successful completion of the program, participants are poised to make a tangible impact by amplifying the representation of women in leadership roles within the energy sector.

About United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

When the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) was created, it brought together several existing foreign assistance organizations and programs. Until then, there had never been a single agency charged with foreign economic development, so with the passage of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 (pdf) by Congress, U.S. foreign assistance activities underwent a major transformation.
