BIODIVERSITY ENGINEER (M/F)
Yaoundé, Cameroon
We are recruiting for our client KHPC in charge of a large-scale project in Cameroon, a Biodiversity Engineer who will be placed under the responsibility of the Environmental Assessment Supervisor and the Environmental & Social Director of the project.
The project site is located approximately 2.5 hours from the city of Yaoundé, straddling the Littoral and Center regions, and three departments: Lékié, Nyong-et-Kélé and Sanaga Maritime. A local office has been established in Evodoula.
The project team divides its time between the Yaoundé offices in the Bastos district and work in Evodoula on the ground.
The project area constitutes a set of ecosystems rich in a great diversity of habitats and terrestrial and aquatic species. The Sanaga presents at this level numerous anastomosing channels (with multiple divergences and reconvergences, like a capillary network) with varied facies and substrates, punctuated by a large number of islands of various sizes. The terrestrial environment is dominated by forest habitats strongly marked by agroforestry and savannah farming. The diversity of these environments and the complexity of the ecosystems present in the project area suggest strong ecological challenges for the development of the project and the control of its biodiversity risks.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) being today the most important global reference in terms of environmental and social standards for major infrastructure projects; its methodology will be applied within the framework of this project. Among these standards, two Performance Standards (NP), NP1 and NP6, include notions of management, conservation of the environment and biodiversity. The implementation of these standards requires a detailed prior assessment of the initial state of the project site (finalized study) and its area of influence; the carrying out of a complete study of its environmental and social impacts (ESIA) whose start is planned for the beginning of 2024, as well as the establishment of a complex compensation program for the efficient management of residual and achieving the objectives of NP6.
Given the complexity of environmental compensation for the dam, line and quarry components of this project, the company is looking for a biodiversity framework capable of supporting the environmental supervisor with expertise in the field of carrying out and monitoring forest inventories and wildlife following the standards of the Ministry in charge of Forests and Wildlife, the implementation of monitoring of wood removal and wildlife rescue procedures, the establishment and management of protected areas or protected areas as well as the calculation of biomass and carbon stocks.
