Job Purpose and Organizational Context
As part of the strengthening of the United Nations Office of Safety and Security (UNDSS) in Cameroon, the Department of Security is looking for a Radio Operator, for better rotation in its multiple responsibilities.
Radio communication is an essential part of our security operations. It allows us to coordinate emergency interventions, maintain constant surveillance of our environment and liaise with the various actors on the ground. To optimize our procedures and ensure smooth and efficient communication, we wish to strengthen our team with a qualified Radio Operator.
Duties and Responsibilities
The radio operator will strengthen the capacities of the SNU radio room and ensure permanent listening and efficient monitoring of the movements of UN staff and consultants. He/she will be placed under the direct supervision of the Local Security Associate (FSA) and the general supervision of the Field Security Coordinator (FSCO) and will work in the Maroua radio room on a rotational basis.
1.) Implementation of the United Nations System VHF and HF communication network
Ensure permanent VHF and HF radio listening;
- Ensure the programming of HF and VHF Radio of the SNU AFP;
- Ensure the proper functioning of HF and VHF networks; he must be able to ensure the maintenance of equipment, then transmit, receive, classify and archive all messages;
- Respect and enforce the rules of use on the network;
- Establish network discipline and require compliance with radio procedure;
- Ensure proper operation of VHF and HF relays and bases; efNoWjn vb9CJ
- Ensure the quality of communications, in particular, note technical problems and inform network users. Important messages should be recorded in a tracking log.
2.) Monitoring of urban and interurban missions of UN staff and consultants throughout the national territory
Ensure proper monitoring of urban and interurban missions;
- Update the mission tracking table;
- Respect radio contact times with staff and consultants on official or private missions;
- Ensure the transmission of all regular or exceptional calls and the dissemination of security messages submitted by the Security Office;
- Answering phone calls from the radio room
3.) Facilitating coordination of communication with UN staff and consultants regarding useful contacts and specific security information
Conduct weekly radio calls for United Nations agencies, funds and programs based in Maroua;
- Facilitate communication with UN staff and consultants regarding useful contacts and specific security information;
- Report directly to the Security Advisor / Local Security Assistant.
4.) Perform tasks assigned by the FSA
Lead and coordinate all activities in the radio room;
- Supervises the transmission of all regular or exceptional calls and the dissemination of security messages submitted by the Security Office;
- Carry out equipment inventories;
- Update a security database on all aspects covering communication: network radio codes, personnel telephone addresses, Selective calls and radio codes of vehicles and UN Bases of the country and the sub-region, monthly and annual statistics of radio calls, monitoring of interurban missions;
- Brief new arrivals on the operation of radios and the procedure in force;
- Schedule periodic training sessions for all staff with agencies.
The incumbent performs other tasks deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
At least 4 years (with a high school diploma) or 1 year (with a bachelor’s degree) of relevant and progressive responsible experience in the field of communication, telecommunications, IT or related field is required
- Experience in a similar position is desired.
- Good knowledge of computer use and Microsoft Office software is required
- Knowledge of using an email tool is required
- A good general knowledge of telecommunications, radio and data transmission will be considered an asset.
- Experience in using radio communication systems and knowledge of country security codes are desirable.
- Experience working in a similar role with the SNU is a great asset
- Perfect command of French is required.
- Knowledge of English could be considered an asset
