Established in 1944, the World Bank Group (WBG) is one of the world’s largest sources of funding and knowledge for development solutions. In fiscal year 2018, the WBG committed $67 billion in loans, grants, equity investments and guarantees to its members and private businesses, of which $24 billion was concessional finance to its poorest members. It is governed by 188-member countries and delivers services out of 120 offices with nearly 15,000 staff located globally.

 

 

The WBG consists of five specialized institutions: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the International Development Association (IDA), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), and the International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).

Context

The World Bank, a leading multilateral institution in global economic development, is looking for a highly organized, energetic and experienced person capable of operating effectively in a demanding fast-paced environment to serve as an Operations Analyst.
The Country Management Unit (CMU) oversees operations in Cameroon, Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, and the Operations Analyst will work primarily on Cameroon. Cameroon is classified as Fragility, Conflict, and Violence (FCV) affected country due to ongoing conflicts in parts of the country (but not in Yaoundé, where the Operations Analyst will be based). Overcoming challenges associated with FCV and other development issues is critical for the World Bank Group to achieve its twin goals of eliminating extreme poverty by 2030 and promoting shared prosperity in a sustainable manner.

Job description
Under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager, who is responsible for managing World Bank’s lending (including 19 projects for an amount of ~$3 billion) and analytical portfolio, establishing and maintaining relationship with clients, development partners and other stakeholders, and responding to all corporate requirements related to the countries under the Country Management Unit (CMU), the Operations Analyst will undertake the following tasks in collaboration with Sr. Operations Officer, Operations Officer and Sr. Operations Assistant in the unit:

• Contribute to monitoring the lending and analytical portfolio, through accessing and generating standard reports, as well as contacting task teams.
• Conduct initial routine reviews of investment project packages for review meetings to ensure that the teams have complied with the checklist.
• Help ensure aide memoire, management letter and other standard correspondence prepared by the task team for the CMU review follow the appropriate format.
• Ensure primary review of project Implementation Status Reports
• Occasionally participates in supervision missions.
• Perform other duties as required (such as support to the Front Office).
• Work as a tag team with the Sr. Operations Assistant to ensure business continuity.

• Candidates must be Swiss nationals.
• Candidates must be between 18 and 29 years of age at the time of application.

• Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (ie studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
• Ability to work with minimum supervision, work under time pressure and be able to prioritize, collaborate with colleagues from different cultures and be a good team player willing to go an extra mile.

Living conditions and remarks
Yaoundé is a reasonably safe, medium sized city although standard precautions such as not walking alone after dark, not displaying outward sign of wealth, etc. apply. There are a number of furnished accommodations appropriate for a one year stay, and supermarkets and traditional markets. Transportation is limited to the use of taxis and private cars. The climate is pleasant year around, with two seasons: dry and rainy.
