The Emerging Global Leader Scholarship at American University (UA) is for high-achieving international students seeking a bachelor’s degree in the United States who are dedicated to positive civic and social change. It is intended for students who will return to their country to improve disadvantaged and underserved communities in their home country.

The scholarships are for international students from any country who are not U.S. citizens, permanent residents of the United States, or dual citizens of the United States and another country.
Scholarship Value/Inclusions
- The Emerging Global Leader Scholarship at American University covers all AU billable expenses (full tuition, room and board). The scholarship does not cover non-billable expenses such as mandatory health insurance, books, airfare, and miscellaneous expenses (approximately US$4,000).
- It is renewable for a total of four years of undergraduate study, based on continued satisfactory academic performance.
Eligibility criteria
- Priority will be given to: International students who have overcome various obstacles and challenges, as well as those from diverse and underrepresented global and socio-economic backgrounds.
- A minimum equivalent of 3.8 GPA (or in the top 10% of the graduating class) for grades 9-12.
- A demonstrated commitment to leadership, volunteerism, community service and improving the needs of people in their home country.
- Students with one of the following 95+ TOEFL iBT scores (all subscores must be 20 or greater); subscores of 24+ on the paper TOEFL (taken after May 31, 2017); 7.0+ IELTS (all subscores must be 6.0 or higher); 33 minimum SAT Reading Subscore; 29 or more ACT English; 65 PTE minimum; 120+ Duolingo (all subscores must be 110 or higher); or Cambridge Assessment English score of 185 or higher. Each subscore must be 169 or greater.
- Students who are still enrolled in secondary or higher education and graduate before June 2023.
- Important: Students in the IB system should plan to complete a full IB diploma with at least 3 higher level subjects. Students following the UK A-Levels system must achieve at least three A-Levels and complete their 13 years of study by August 2023.

- You are enrolled or have already started post-secondary education at another university in your home country or the United States.
- You graduated from high school before 2021.
Application Instructions
To apply for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship, you must apply and complete the AU EGL Scholarship Application, Common or Coalition Application, and International Admissions Process by December 15, 2021 (priority deadline) or no later than January 15, 2023. Applicants for the AU EGL Scholarship Program must apply for a regular decision for Fall (August) 2023. Do not apply for an Early Decision (ED).
