INTRODUCTION
Medical humanitarian non-governmental organization (NGO) governed by Swiss law; Doctors of the World Switzerland (MdM-CH) works in the field to restore sustainable access to healthcare for excluded people. It has been present in Cameroon since 2013 and implements several projects, around three (03) main thematic axes: Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Prevention and Management of Violence and Pediatric Palliative Care.
As part of its prevention and management of violence axis, MdM-CH has been implementing since March 2023, the third phase of a three (3) year project entitled “Strengthening the protection of vulnerable populations in the North-West and West regions of Cameroon“, which aims to contribute to the reduction of violence and the optimization of victims’ access to integrated victim care services in the North-West and West regions of Cameroon, targeting internally displaced populations from the NWSW security crisis as well as vulnerable host populations.
The project provides free holistic care for victims in hospitals in the North-West region (Bamenda and Santa) and the West region (Bafoussam and Mbouda), with a particular focus on men and boys, victims of violence. Care to victims is provided in the operations of 2 Integrated Support Units (ISU) located at the Bamenda and Bafoussam regional hospitals. As with all MdM-CH’s projects, this intervention is part of a dynamic that combines institutional anchoring to facilitate the development of service provision and a community component to improve demand. The community mechanisms ensure the prompt identification of victims of violence including those at risk of violence, the provision of emergent psychological support while putting at the disposal of these victims’ information on existing life-saving services.
Within the framework of the current project MdM is developing community protection mechanisms including networks of community relay agents, mobile clinic teams and protection agents in the project’s 4 towns – Bamenda, Bafoussam, Mbouda and Santa.
In Bamenda and Santa a network of 10 community relay agents and 8 members of 2 multidisciplinary mobile clinic teams (social workers, nurses/midwives, psychologists and legal counsels) constitute the existing community protection mechanism. To facilitate the activities and ensure a positive impact on the target communities, MdM is seeking the services of a consultant or a team of consultants to moderate 3 capacity training sessions for 10 community relay agents and 8 members of 2 mobile clinic teams on the identification, detection, provision of psychosocial first aid, referral and follow-up of cases of GBV with a focus on men and boys.
