The context :
For more than two decades, Cameroon has been committed to a very serious approach towards responsible exploitation, the preservation of biodiversity and local transformation. Thus the old logging regime has been replaced by that of forest management units (UFA) allocated for 30 years. This allows beneficiary companies to make heavier investments and participate in sustainable management.
Alongside the UFA regime, the government has also set up the community forest regime and communal forests to allow village communities to exploit the forests on their land themselves. This very selective exploitation is done each year often in partnership with private companies, nevertheless gives rise to many abuses, in particular the poor compliance with the prescriptions of the development plan and the environmental and social management plan, which is the cause of the degradation of the forest cover. and biodiversity.
With a view to meeting the challenges related to the implementation of good environmental and social practices and respect for the rights of indigenous and local populations. WWF works with municipalities, indigenous and local populations in landscapes with a high concentration of biodiversity.
In order to follow in time and space the effects of the various joint actions carried out to preserve the integrity of the forest. WWF intends to set up a forest integrity monitoring system within local communities. To this end, it proposes to conduct a baseline study on forest integrity in the communal forest of Yokadouma and the peripheral community forests using the Forest Integrity Assessment Tool (FIA). More specifically, it is about:
- Stratify and sample said forests;
- Collect data on: Structure and composition, threats and impacts, habitats and target species…;
- Make estimates by strata of the state of the forest.
Missions of the consultant / Deliverables
The consultant must produce the following elements:
- A working methodology which will have to be validated together with the WWF;
- An evaluation report comprising the following chapters: Summary, abstract, list of tables, figures and photo, list of acronyms, context and justification of the evaluation, methodology, results, conclusion and recommendations. This report should not exceed 35 pages.
Consultant Profile
Anyone interested in this consultation must have the following qualifications
- At least Bac + 5 in forestry, agricultural, environmental science and botany;
- At least 5 years of relevant experience, preferably in a governmental or non-governmental, international or sub-regional institution, forest inventory and environmental and social impact assessment;
- A good knowledge of the biophysical environment and the socio-economic context of the work area
- A good command of at least cartographic software;
- Have already carried out similar work;
- Have the ability to communicate orally and in writing in French or English.
