Job Objective
The Deputy Anti-Poaching Coordinator will supervise the Chief Operators, Technical Assistants and Conservation Support Patrollers. He will also contribute to the joint management of MINFOF (Eco-guards) and MINDEF (Military) agents in Cameroon, as well as MEPDD (Eco-guards) agents in Chad, in close collaboration with the park authorities.
He will participate in the implementation of strategic anti-poaching action plans, in collaboration with the LAB WCS Coordinator. He will also monitor the activities planned as part of the support provided to MINFOF, MEPDD and private partners for the conservation of ecosystems in national parks, hunting zones (ZICs) and ecological corridors linking Protected Areas (PAs).
The successful candidate will need to be comfortable living and working in remote conservation areas and be able to operate in a complex political and professional environment.
Responsibilities:
The Deputy Anti-Poaching Coordinator will advise on all aspects related to the improvement of anti-poaching operations in the PAs of the Benue, Bouba Njidda and Sena Oura National Parks. He will also be responsible for the prevention of wildlife crime in and around the Parks (Hunting Zones – ZICs / Ecological Corridors).
The LAB Deputy Coordinator will support the WCS LAB Coordinator on the following aspects:
- Security and establishment of standards in the fight against poaching.
- Capacity building of anti-poaching personnel – including training and supervision.
- Planning and targeted operations.
- Support for legal and judicial unity.
- Regular activity reports.
Specifically, CALAB will work closely with the Conservation Service and the WCS LAB Coordinator to:
- Ensure and monitor the implementation of the strategic action plan for the fight against poaching (organization of patrols, operations room, administrative monitoring, training, reporting of field operations) for all WCS Landscape projects and the training of WCS staff as well as anti-poaching partners (MINFOF/MEPDD) operating in the landscape area.
- Strengthen, centralize and monitor the collection and processing of information in the area.
- Raise awareness and strengthen the judicial system by ensuring that sentences are enforced.
- Expand collaboration and coordination in anti-poaching with private partners (ZICs) located on the periphery of the WCS Landscape National Parks.
- Raise awareness and collaborate with communities on the periphery of the Parks to promote the sustainability of protected areas and ecological interconnections.
- Plan and coordinate wildlife conservation and protection activities in the parks covered by the landscape.
- Establish collaboration and synergies with WCS partners involved in the implementation of projects related to environmental protection, food security and territorial governance.
- Ensure strict application of the laws in force in each country concerned, while respecting international human rights standards and adhering to the WCS Code of Conduct.
- Assist the anti-poaching department in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual technical reports, according to donor requirements and WCS procedures.
- Support any other request related to the implementation and proper functioning of the landscape.
Required qualifications:
- Minimum 3 to 5 years of leadership, management and/or advisory experience in anti-poaching operations, with a focus on information collection and analysis, preferably in Protected Areas.
- Analytical mind to understand the political, legal, security and criminal issues affecting the Sudano-Sahelian landscape and region.
- Proven experience in leadership, management and team building, with the ability to motivate, set goals and manage the performance of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated experience in training and supervising staff, enabling the development of skills and knowledge of individuals and teams.

- Ability to communicate and explain complex processes and concepts effectively.
- Excellent organizational and coordination skills.
- Commitment to working collaboratively with all staff and in a professional and diplomatic manner with all partners – governmental and non-governmental.
- Proven experience in establishing and maintaining partnerships and relationships in a complex political environment.
- Willingness to become familiar with the institutional and legal framework of conservation as well as relevant policy challenges.
- Proven experience in remote areas and ability to adapt to difficult environments.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in French (English is an asset), including the ability to write analytical, accurate and timely reports.
- Previous experience in Africa and ability to work with people from different cultures, nationalities and backgrounds. Experience in Sahelian Africa is an asset.
