Applications for the Ashinaga Africa 2024 initiative are now open! The Ashinaga
Initiative for Africa is a fully-funded university leadership program that aims to provide high-potential orphan students from sub-Saharan Africa with access to higher education in Japan, the United Kingdom, Europe and in the USA. Our vision is that after graduating from university abroad, our scholars will return to their country/continent to become leaders and empower others.
Application deadline:
- Deadline for English and French-speaking applications: January 12, 2024 at midnight. Midnight GMT
- The deadline for applicants from Portuguese-speaking countries (Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe and Mozambique) is Friday, October 20, 2023 at midnight GMT.
Eligible field of study: Courses offered at the higher institution chosen by the candidate.
To be taken in (country): higher institutions outside of Africa, in countries such as Japan, USA, UK, etc.
Eligible countries:
Applicants must have citizenship and have completed or be in the process of completing secondary education in one of the following countries:
Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cabo Verde, CAR, Cameroon , Chad, Comoros, Cote d ‘Ivoire, Djibouti, DRC, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Kenya, Kingdom of eSwatini, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger , Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Seychelles, Sudan, Tanzania, Gambia, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Eligibility: Applicants must:
- Having lost one or both parents.
- Have completed secondary education and received the results of their national secondary education examination (technical and vocational diplomas are not accepted) within the last two years (any date after August 2, 2021, including the whole year 2022 and 2023) or will have completed secondary education and received the results of the final exam before February 09, 2024.
- Be born after September 1, 2001.
- Not having the means to pursue university studies abroad without external financial assistance.
- Fluent in English, French or Portuguese.
- Be consistently ranked in the top 10% of their class during their last 2-3 years of high school.
- Be able to participate in the two preparatory programs of Ashinaga , for one year, before entering university.
- Commit to returning home or to Sub-Saharan Africa and contributing to society in Sub-Saharan Africa upon graduation.
- Have no dependents who might interfere with academic progress.
- Have a good enough state of health to be able to study abroad.

How to apply:
There are three ways to apply for the Ashinaga Africa Initiative, but we prefer online applications . There are no application fees, and you never have to pay anyone to apply or to apply on your behalf. Please note that if you apply by mail, not all submitted documents will be returned to you. Therefore, you must send copies of the documents ONLY.
Candidate Registration
- Photo or scan of at least one of the following documents: passport, national identity card or birth certificate.
- Photo or scan of your last high school report card/transcript.
- Photo or scan of your secondary school final exam results certificate (if applicable)**.
**For students who will receive their exam results in February 2023, we will ask you to send your exam certificate as soon as possible after receiving it.
- Passport type photograph
- Passport or national identity card
- Applicant’s birth certificate.
- Death certificate of the deceased parent(s), with the name of the deceased parent, or other official document proving the death of the parent(s) or orphan status.
- All secondary school report cards/transcripts for the last two years.
- Secondary education final examination certificate, indicating the grades obtained in each subject*.
- A letter of recommendation from a school principal or teacher. This letter must include the e-mail address and telephone number of the person concerned and must contain information about your results and your character during your secondary studies. All letters of recommendation must have an official signature or stamp.
- University transcripts or other results (if applicable).
- Certificates of extracurricular activities, training courses, jobs or other commitments (if applicable).
