UNHCR’s Representation in Cameroon covering Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Sao Tome and Principe, is seeking an intern for a six-month internship in its Communications Unit in Yaounde. The internship would suit candidates with interest and studies or experience in communications, media and public outreach, campaigning, and online communication. Familiarity with international affairs, international humanitarian affairs and/or refugee related issues is an asset.

Since 1950, UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, has helped tens of millions of people restart their lives. Today, a staff of more than 10,000 people in 130 countries continues to help and protect millions of refugees, returnees, internally displaced and stateless people.
In Cameroon, UNHCR works in collaboration with government and partner organizations to maintain access to rights and basic services for over two million forcibly displaced people, including through registration and refugee status determination activities, child protection, gender-based violence prevention and response, facilitating the delivery of civil documents and more. Concurrently, UNHCR searches for durable solutions so refugees and internal displaced people can thrive beyond surviving, by promoting their integration in communities that have welcomed them, encouraging self-sufficiency through livelihood activities, supporting the resettlement of the most vulnerable of refugees, finding third- country complementary pathways for other refugees, and, for those who choose to, facilitating a return to their country of origin in safety and dignity.
The Cameroon Multi-Country Office Communications team provides information on UNHCR’s role protecting and assisting refugees to national and international media outlets, and engages national and international audiences through strategic partnerships, digital outreach, campaigns, and events.
Duties and Responsibilities:

 

 

The intern will gain unique knowledge about UNHCR’s global, regional and national role, capabilities, programs, and impact, and the role of communications and outreach in achieving UNHCR’s mandate as they – Assist in collecting information, identifying and developing
stories about refugees, internally displaced persons and persons at risk of statelessness for UNHCR’s media platforms, including assistance in generating content for social media;
– Assist in the preparation of print and digital communication materials (web stories, photo essays, factsheets, info graphics etc.), visibility items, and in publication design management;
– Assist in implementing campaigns and staging events;
– Support outreach, including media relations, digital media and multi-media projects, to ensure public support for refugees and other people served by UNHCR;
– Assist with monitoring national and international media coverage of UNHCR’s work with refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons and people at risk of statelessness in Cameroon;
– Undertake other projects as needed to further assist the Communications Unit’s work.
Eligibility:
– Current students or recent graduates (have completed studies within one year of applying from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO) with Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in journalism, communications or related field.
– Superior command of French and English languages ​​with excellent written and oral communication skills;
– Working knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite is desired. Knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop is a plus. Proficiency in Canvas is a plus.
– Ability to multi-task and prioritize with minimal supervision. Attention to detail required.
– Have no direct family ties with a UNHCR staff member (including Temporary Appointment holder) nor with a member of the Affiliate Workforce.

Standard Job Description
Communications Assistant
Organizational Setting and Work Relationships

The Communications Assistant will report to the Communications Officer and will have regular contacts within the office/unit involving exchange of information. S/he will also have limited external contacts on routine matters.

All UNHCR staff members are accountable to perform their duties as reflected in their job description. They do so within their delegated authorities, in line with the regulatory framework of UNHCR which includes the UN Charter, UN Staff Regulations and Rules, UNHCR Policies and Administrative Instructions as well as relevant frameworks. In addition, staff members are required to discharge their responsibilities in a manner consistent with the core, functional, cross-functional and managerial competencies and UNHCR¿s core values ​​of professionalism, integrity and respect for diversity.

Duties
– Collect press-cuttings of articles in national, regional, international and periodicals that pertain to refugee related issues and to the work of the office.
– Compile and maintain the mailing list for press releases, information bulletins, etc and ensure timely despatch of information to media and other interested parties.
– Classify and maintain adequate stock of PI materials and promote sale of merchandise where appropriate.
– Maintain up-to-date the catalog of PI material and types monthly report regarding sales and stocks for submission to PI at Headquarters in accordance with established guidelines.
– Provide clerical assistance with regard to PI events such as poster campaigns, exhibitions, and public awareness raising events.
– Respond to routine telephone and written inquiries from a variety of sources such as the media, the public, NGOs and government officials etc.
– Maintain PI files up-to-date.

– Perform other related duties as required.
