UNICEF is an international humanitarian agency for children created by the United Nations Charter in 1946. The organization is present in more than 192 countries and works in the areas of health, education, water and sanitation, child protection, HIV and AIDS, nutrition, policy and social protection. UNICEF operates in both humanitarian and development contexts, responding to the needs of children and women, especially girls and the most vulnerable.

 

 

UNICEF’s presence in Cameroon dates back to 1975. The organization works in the areas of education, water and sanitation, child protection, HIV and AIDS. While its upstream efforts focus on advocacy and lobbying for budgetary conditions favorable to children and women and the formulation of policies to promote their growth and development. At the operational level, UNICEF Cameroon focuses on building the capacity of stakeholders, providing services and creating partnerships for the improvement of children and women.

The overall goal of the Child Protection Program is to ensure that children, especially adolescent girls in vulnerable areas, are better protected from violence, exploitation and harmful practices, including in the context of humanitarian emergencies. The program thus contributes to the strengthening of governmental and community child protection systems, in order to identify and combat child rights violations more effectively. Particular attention is given to birth registration, prevention and response to physical and sexual violence, and elimination of child marriage based on evidence.

How can you make a difference?

The COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent roll-out of information campaigns for vaccinations has further highlighted the crucial role social media plays in sharing information and engaging audiences. Digital media, especially social platforms, are changing the ways people interact, giving rise to new and diverse audiences and empowering civil society in ways that have profound implications for UNICEF’s work – and for how communication and digital engagement are used to support that work.

To drive change for children, UNICEF Cameroon is supporting the Cameroon Government for the implementation of the national SBC/C4D national strategy, with a focus on digital engagement strategy both in humanitarian and development context to reach and engage meaningfully with audiences across multiple digital platforms. UNICEF Cameroon is seeking to move beyond disseminating information towards having conversations. Digital content and engagement will reinforce UNICEF’s leadership as a credible voice for and with children.

UNICEF Cameroon has experienced strong growth across all social media channels in the past 2 years. UNICEF Cameroon is seeking to recruit an exceptional Digital Engagement National UN Specialist Volunteer spearhead UNICEF’s continued growth on social media, and reach the bold targets set by the organization and Cameroon Government for SBC response. The Digital Engagement UN Volunteer will have the proven skills to support Cameroon national digital engagement strategy, create engaging and innovative content for all channels, fact realize checking, will be up to date and passionate about the latest technologies, techniques and industry best practices, and will be able to apply them to reach a broad range of audiences for a better response to infodemic on social and digital media.

Specifically, this position will ensure Cameroon SBC strategy increases its digital reach, facilitates increased engagement and participation from audiences, as well as ensuring social and digital media audiences have a greater understanding, and deeper connections on critical priority issues on demand generation and use of available services, mostly to achieve key results for children and utilization of COVID-19 vaccine.

Task description
Under the direct supervision of SBC- Community Engagement Officer, the National UN Specialist Volunteer will:

• Learn and develop publications, social media posts write ups, text for digital activation in accordance with the content plan.
• Contribute to the production of content for SBC response. Generate and implement creative ideas for social media activations on SBC, mainly in the domain of vaccination, healthy behaviors, youth development-related topics. Adapt messages from UNICEF Cameroon social media packs mainly for infodemic campaign.
• Support daily management of UNICEF-led social media channels, including UReport. Together with graphic designer and video editors, contribute to the production of social media assets for UNICEF-supported social media channels. Support for content management, including publication of posts/stories; providing regular community management; responding to inquiries, maintaining social media assets.
• Identify and report on daily basis “fake news”/”false information” mainly on CoViD-19 vaccination and suggest messages and ways of addressing them.
• Develop and update monthly and weekly content plans in close cooperation with Program sections. Preparing monthly/weekly reports on performance of the channels. Fill in the duties for this assignment.
• Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.
• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
• Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
• Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
• Assist with the UNV Buddy Program for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
• Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

13. Results/Expected Outputs:

• Result 1: Digital content on SBC response produced and disseminated and targeted groups reached with accurate information for a better use of available basic social services.
• Result 2: Daily report on social media management available and lessons learned from the reports used to improve the SBC digital response.
• Result 3: Publications, social media posts write ups, text for digital activations in accordance with the content plan available
• Result 4: “Fake news”/”false information” on CoViD-19 vaccination in particular are identified and reported; and messages/ways of addressing them suggested.
• Result 5: monthly and weekly content plans available and regularly updated in close cooperation with PAC and other Program sections.
• Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment
• A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed Eligibility criteria
