MADEINEUROPE Summer School “Migration and Diversity in European Cities”(Funding available)

Migrants have formed a substantial part of many European societies for centuries. Yet, over the past three decades, the size, speed, and spread of human mobility has grown in significance. These accelerated changes are transforming local communities and the dynamics and politics of diversity at destination, as well as at origin. Cities are the primary destination of migrants and where migration-driven diversity is occurring at a faster pace. They are also strategic sites for the formation of new types of identities and communities that stretch across national borders and new political subjects and possibilities of social transformation.

At the 2023 MADEINEUROPE Summer School on Migration and Diversity in European Cities, we approach these changes and dynamics through a range of interdisciplinary perspectives on migration, diversity and inclusion. The Summer School is organised by six European universities part of the EUniWell Network and led by Professor Nando Sigona, director of the University of Birmingham’s Institute for Research into Superdiversity.

The Summer School will take place from 29 May to 30 June 2023 and includes online lectures, seminars, workshops and mentoring and a final in-person event in Nantes (France) on 29-30 June 2023.

Contents and format of the Summer School

Topics will include the politics of diversity in European cities; the European governance of asylum and immigration; social work, precarious work and labour exploitation; anti-racist activism and the alliances and solidarities between migrants and non-migrants; historical perspectives on migration, diversity and inclusion; the interfaces of migration and urban marginality; the nexus between gender and migration; the role of transnational diasporic connections; the use of participatory and visual methodologies in migration studies and other key topics.

The sessions will adopt lenses from law, anthropology, history, social policy, international relations, human geography, social work, and sociology, and discuss a range of methodological approaches. We will focus primarily on European cities but always be attentive to the transnational connections and global networks that connect them to the world, especially the Mediterranean and the Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) region.

Over the course of four weeks, 25 selected participants will access four hours of lectures and live seminars each week, all to take place online. Each participant will receive a one-to-one mentoring session to support their academic and career planning. Students will also be divided into small groups and develop group projects, supported by tutorials with a dedicated mentor.

Participants will be able to meet in-person at a closing workshop and academic conference hosted by the University of Nantes. Groups will present their projects here. Distinguished academic speakers will be announced. The language of instruction will be English.

Participation

The Summer School is open to postgraduate students (Masters and PhD level) from law, humanities, social sciences or other related disciplines affiliated to

 EUniWell universities

(University of Birmingham, University of Cologne, University of Florence, Linneaus University, University of Murcia, Nantes University, Semmelweis University, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev, and University of Konstanz) and practitioners associated to EUniWell

 partner organisations.

Cost

The course is free to attend. Bursaries contributing to travel and subsistence costs up to €400 will be available for selected participants to attend the final event at the University of Nantes.
