SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES

 

Funding provided by the Norwegian government to the World Heritage Fund is dedicated to the preservation of World Heritage sites in Africa, in particular natural World Heritage sites inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger or sites under serious threat. This funding enables UNESCO to develop and implement, together with States Parties and other conservation partners, a series of ambitious activities aimed at preserving natural, cultural and mixed sites in Central Africa.

 

 

 

In this context and under the general authority of the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Central Africa, and the direct supervision of the Specialist and Head of the Culture Sector in Central Africa, the person in charge will have to provide technical support for the implementation, monitoring and assistance in reporting of projects funded by the Norwegian government in natural World Heritage sites in Central Africa.

 

In particular, she/he will carry out the following tasks:

 

  • Ensure, in close collaboration with the UNESCO World Heritage Center and project implementation partners, the monitoring of the implementation of activities funded by Norway with the aim of strengthening the preservation of natural sites inscribed on the the World Heritage List in Central Africa;
  • Contribute to the preparation of annual project work plans, and participate in the monitoring of field activities;
  • Contribute to the planning, management, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of activities funded by Norway in Central Africa;
  • Draft official correspondence, proposals for new projects, develop and contribute to the implementation of projects and then facilitate the evaluation of the results obtained and the impact of UNESCO activities funded by Norway on natural World Heritage sites ;
  • Identify, design and implement activities to strengthen the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in the Central Africa sub-region;
  • Support national capacity building in all key areas of the World Heritage Convention through training and link with the Yaoundé Call to Action;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key national authorities in charge of natural heritage, local authorities, intergovernmental and non-governmental institutions, civil society organizations, and other national and international partners involved in the protection of natural heritage;
  • Work closely with the team of the Natural Sciences Sector of the UNESCO Regional Office for Central Africa as well as the Africa and Natural Heritage Units of the World Heritage Centre, and provide inputs, including data and updated statistics, for the preparation of thematic reports and information points on the implementation of programs and projects using the relevant tools, as well as contributing to the activities and objectives of the Culture Sector;
  • Contribute to resource mobilization by exploring and developing alternative financing mechanisms for the preservation of natural heritage in Central Africa;
  • Support the capitalization of the results of projects and programs on natural heritage and contribute to the overall visibility of activities funded by Norway in Central Africa;
  • Perform any additional tasks required and assigned by the Head of Culture Sector.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education

 

University degree (Masters or equivalent) in the field of natural heritage, environmental sciences, management of protected areas, wildlife and forest conservation, biodiversity or any other related field.

 

Professional experience

 

  • At least 4 years of relevant professional experience in the field of natural world heritage, management of protected areas or any other field mentioned above;
  • Experience in developing, coordinating and implementing nature conservation programs, activities and projects;
  • Experience in fundraising and resource mobilization;
  • Experience in outreach activities, community dialogues and building effective and sustainable partnerships/networks.

Skills and competences

 

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, project management and coordination skills;
  • Good knowledge of the World Heritage Convention;
  • Proven ability to produce analytical reports and recommendations in the field of culture, nature and sustainable development;
  • Ability to establish, maintain and strengthen effective working relationships with national/local authorities, cultural institutions and relevant intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations;
  • Excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills, in particular the ability to collect, synthesize and analyze information from various sources and, on this basis, to draft working and information documents in a clear and concise manner;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team and in a multicultural environment;
  • Good level of autonomy and productivity;
  • Excellent knowledge of basic computer tools (MS Word, Excel, Outlook etc.) and remote communication tools (Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, etc.).

 

Languages

 

  • Excellent knowledge of English or French (written and spoken) and good knowledge of the other language.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Professional experience

 

  • Professional experience with the United Nations system and/or in the field of international relations and diplomacy, multilateral cooperation and development.
  • Research and analysis in the field of the management of protected areas and biodiversity.

 

Skills and competences

 

  • Ability to work effectively in a complex and changing environment.
  • Good knowledge of the Culture Sector of the UNESCO Office in Central Africa and knowledge of UNESCO projects in the field of natural heritage protection.
