BACKGROUND AND ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

This position is in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights – Central Africa Regional Office (OHCHR-CARO) based in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The incumbent reports to the Regional Adviser on democracy

POSITION PURPOSE

KEY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Under the overall directive of the Regional Representative and the supervision and guidance of the Regional Adviser on Democracy, the Assistant Human Rights Officer will be responsible for the following duties: 1.) Implementation of OHCHR-

CARO democracy program activities, including:

Conduct research and collect information pertaining to Human Rights, Democracy and related public freedom in the sub region, including their gender dimensions from a variety of sources (eg communications, publications, the press…) to keep abreast of issues/events and provide up to-date information
Participate in preparation and implementation of programming activities including meetings, workshops and consultations.
Support capacity building activities in the democracy-related issues through facilitation of workshops and trainings
Draft and translate reports, briefings, and correspondences on human rights in particular public freedom and democracy-related issues
Undertake missions as required
Participate in meetings with relevant program partners, including UN actors, civil society representatives, diplomatic representatives, etc.
Participate in consultations and meetings of interagency groups on human rights and democracy including on the right to participate in public affairs and other human rights in the context of elections; prepare summaries of outcome and propose follow-up actions
Facilitate contacts with potential program partners.

2.) Support to OHCHR-CAROs mission and program strategy in central Africa, including:

Participate in annual office workplan process
Identify areas for office interventions within relevant area of ​​programming.

3) Perform other duties as required by the Regional Representative and the Regional Adviser on Democracy within the context of OHCHR-CAROs mission and work plan in central Africa.

Monitor civic space participation in countries covered by OHCHR Regional Office
Assist in the analysis of information pertaining to democracy-related issues in assigned area

Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities: N/A

REQUIREMENTS:

Education

A master’s or a bachelor’s degree in human rights, international law, law, political or social sciences is required.
Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

At least 2 years of experience in human rights, international relations, law, or related area is required with bachelor’s degree, no experience is required with Master
Experience in writing a variety of reports, communications, briefings, statements, etc., is desirable.
Experience in working on democracy issues related in central Africa region is desirable.
Experience in gender-sensitive programming is desirable.
UN experience in the area is desirable.
fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
