Description
Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is one of the most important humanitarian organizations in the world. The IRC provides relief, rehabilitation and post-conflict reconstruction support to victims of oppression and violent conflict. Present in more than 40 countries, IRC’s mission is to help people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and take charge of their future.
Faced with a growing humanitarian crisis, the IRC launched emergency programs in the Far North region of Cameroon. Programs include Environmental Health, Food Security, Women’s Protection and Empowerment, Protection and Rule of Law, WASH, Recovery and Economic Development. In its 2020 strategic action plan, IRC Cameroon is committed to continuing to provide essential humanitarian services, with a focus on community safety and ensuring that affected populations can meet their basic needs. , while building the resilience of beneficiaries, especially women and girls, and addressing the needs of young people.
Under the supervision of the Child Protection Officer and the MHPSS coordinator, he or she supports, he or she participates in the implementation of the mental health program according to the Mh-Gap-GI approach adapted to Cameroon, in providing quality care to beneficiaries by reinforcing their knowledge and skills on the basic notions of mental health and psychological first aid with the care providers of the health structures where he or she operates; and by carrying out community actions for prevention, awareness and protection of beneficiaries affected by mental disorders.
Intervention zone
The MHPSS Assistants will be based in Kousseri and Fotokol in the Logone & Chari department with frequent travel throughout the Program coverage area as needed.
Duration of Contract: 10 Months
Responsibilities
The MHPSS Assistant will carry out the following responsibilities:
A. Implementation of activities
• Ensure the integration of psychosocial support and mental health into general health care.
• Carry out a complete psychosocial assessment of the mental health beneficiary, highlighting their needs and resources, and directing them to the necessary care or support services.
• Set up and follow a therapeutic support framework taking into account all the characteristics of the beneficiary’s vulnerability, while being attentive to the needs of security, protection, education, housing and health.
• Under the close supervision of the clinical psychologist, and according to the conditions defined by the latter, he will carry out the assessments and clinical care of patients related to Protection.
• Map the human resources of the community (various committees, leaders, groups and associations), and rely on all socio-cultural resources promoting the resilience and reintegration of the beneficiary, to develop recreational, professional and social activities adapted to the age to sex and positive tradition.
• Through discussion groups and working sessions, he ensures the psychoeducation of patients and community leaders, and facilitates their sharing of experience on mental health and its contributing factors, and its importance for the subject, his family and the community.
• Be attentive to mental health and psychosocial support needs in the community and support community initiatives that promote family and community support.
• Work to reduce stigma and discrimination of beneficiaries in the community, through awareness raising aimed at improving the perception of mental health and initiating positive behavior change in the community, towards beneficiaries and mental health.
• Develops and justifies the content of community awareness themes, and proposes the associated tools.
• Realization of internal referrals (from other IRC programs) and external referrals (to other partners and stakeholders on the intervention sites).
• Appropriately fill in beneficiary psychosocial assessment and monitoring forms, list in a weekly report the various activities carried out in the field and archive the data in the register provided for this purpose.
B. Reporting and Coordination
• Submit internal reports to the supervisor on time;
• Produces reports and contributes to monthly and project progress reports
• Participates in weekly internal coordination meetings as well as inter-organization coordination meetings if necessary
• Works in coordination with other actors and services existing in the intervention areas to provide a better response to the needs of children and their families
• Management of the documentation and data system and application of monitoring tools
• Contributes to the development of activities for future projects and grants
C. General
• Commits to respecting the IRC Way (IRC Ethics).
• Undertakes to ensure the optimal implementation of these Policies in its work environment.
• Is available to carry out any other specific task deemed useful by his direct superior or by the IRC.
• Ensure that all activities will be implemented in accordance with IRC operational policies.
• Proactively and regularly assesses the safety and security of teams in the field and reports any incidents or concerns to the Protection Officer.

Profile
• Technical degree or diploma in social work, psychology, social science or related degree desired
• At least 1 year of experience in implementing child protection, psychosocial support or case management programs
• Experience working in humanitarian or development contexts desirable
• Demonstrated understanding of working with children and vulnerable children
• Fluency in French essential, working knowledge of other local languages is an asset
• Previous experience in emergency preparedness and response preferred
