Expected trips: Regular trips in and around the National Parks of Faro, Bénoué and Bouba-Ndjida as well as Waza, but also in Yaoundé

In northern Cameroon, WCS implements activities aimed at conservation, stability and sustainable development in and around the landscape including the National Parks of Faro, Bénoué and Bouba-Ndjida as well as Waza. The Communication Manager will be based in Garoua to support the WCS North Cameroon program.

The program, which is part of the long-term intervention of WCS, aims to promote a governance approach to land use that balances the ways in which natural resources are used and exploited by the community. human and wildlife protection needs, including the management of protected areas. The program also aims to protect and secure wildlife within the protected areas of national parks, and their peripheral zones which include hunting concessions (ZIC).

 

 

 

 

 

 

In this context, WCS is looking for a candidate for the position of Communication Manager – WCS North Cameroon program, who will be in charge of communication and visibility of the activities of the North Cameroon program, with the aim of promoting, disseminate and support the objectives of the WCS strategy. Success in this position is defined by: an increased and shared understanding – as well as greater support – of the values, mission and objectives of the North Cameroon program by the target audiences (including the general public, direct and final beneficiaries projects, donors and other partners present at the territorial and national level); measurable changes in knowledge, behaviors and practices among target audiences; stakeholders regularly informed of the news of the North Cameroon program; coordination of messages and improved internal communication between partners operating within the framework of the North Cameroon programme.

 

Responsibilities

 

Support for the development and implementation of the communication strategy of the North Cameroon program:

  • Implement and update the 5-year communication strategy
  • Developed and implemented the annual communications work plan for the North Cameroon program
  • Support the monitoring and evaluation of the communication strategy and plan, in collaboration with the Monitoring, Evaluation, Adaptation and Learning team
  • Proactively identify communication opportunities and partnerships

 

Support for internal communication and inter-partner coordination:

  • Work in close communication with the WCS Cameroon program at the national office level and territorial programs and projects, fostering awareness and promotion of the WCS mission
  • Closely coordinate activities with the Management and the various departments of the North Cameroon program, as well as with the Regional Communication Manager
  • Coordinate communication products with partners, as well as regular communication coordination meetings; supervise all Communication and Visibility activities of the partners of the North Cameroon program; and to submit them for approval to the Deputy Director before their distribution outside, according to the agreements between the parties
  • Collaborate in the monitoring of projects, identifying and implementing the most appropriate communication and visibility tools to promote interaction and synergy between the different partners operating in the territory of the program
  • Coordinate with program partners and the Community Conservation (CoCo) team on the development and organization of outreach events
  • Support internal communication capacity building

 

Development, management and updating of the communication channels of the North Cameroon program:

  • Developed and managed social networks
  • Developed, produced and regularly distributed program newsletters
  • Write, update and distribute web pages, fact sheets, brochures, infographics…
  • Produce stories and articles (social networks, websites…)
  • Generate visual elements (photos, videos…)
  • Produce brand tools (clothes…)

 

Support for media relations of the North Cameroon program:

  • Create, update and manage media contact lists for the North Cameroon program
  • Write and distribute press releases and press kits
  • Participated in local radio interviews and solicitations
  • Manage national media requests and visits
  • As needed, support international media visits
  • Prepared Q&As, key messages and briefing notes for Northern Cameroon program spokespersons
  • Support logistical arrangements for media, photographers and filmmakers within and outside the program, in line with the North Cameroon program guidelines

 

Project management :

  • Manage communication equipment
  • Participate in monthly activity planning and capacity building sessions
  • Prepare Terms of Reference and budget requests for communication activities

 

Qualifications

 

–        Hold a master’s degree in communication, information and communication sciences, social sciences, and/or any other field related to communication, advocacy and/or behavior change

–        Have at least 3-5 years of relevant experience in the communication sector

–        Have experience with the Communication and Visibility procedures of different donors

–        Significant experience in press relations at local, national and (ideally) international level

–        An understanding of biodiversity conservation issues in Africa (desirable)

–        Have proven experience in the design and formulation of communication and visibility plans aimed at civil society, local and national administrations, various bodies and organizations, through a wide range of tools and modern means of communication (networks social media, newsletters, print, media, display, photography, audiovisual, radio, TV) as well as in the relationship with the various communication service providers (graphic designers, printers, photographers, video editors, etc.)

–        Demonstrate the ability to work in a team indicating the appropriate communication tools, supervise and evaluate communication and visibility actions

–        A proactive, positive and responsible approach in the work to be done

–        Have excellent writing skills in French, good knowledge of Fulfulde and/or English both orally and in writing will be appreciated

–        Have excellent computer skills

–        Demonstrated openness and sensitivity to the socio-cultural environment of the North Cameroon program

–        Be able to remain flexible, efficient, enthusiastic and diplomatic in a complex and demanding environment; willingness to spend extended periods in the field in sometimes basic conditions
