The “Community Development and Child Protection Coordinator” is responsible for implementing community and child-centered approaches in Barry Callebaut’s cocoa sourcing areas in Cameroon. He/She is responsible for developing interventions, supervising implementation and monitoring while ensuring the quality of program results. The coordinator is dedicated to ensuring smooth teamwork within the ComDev team and generally within the country team. She/he develops a strategic plan to meet community needs over time by identifying resources, stakeholders and potential funding sources. Key elements of the position include community advocacy and networking, strategic planning of thematic areas, developing and strengthening partnerships, and integrating child-centered community development.

 




 

Key responsibilities include:

Within delegated authority, the Coordinator is responsible for carrying out the following tasks:

1. Activity design, development and management

Responsible for delivering a range of quality activities, aimed at improving the well-being of cocoa producers and the empowerment of women, to strengthen local and national systems for the protection of human rights and children’s rights, as well as to increase the knowledge of communities in matters of child protection and rights in accordance with the national action plan;

Ensure alignment of the implementation of community development programs in Cameroon with Barry Callebaut’s overall strategy, quality implementation of the risk-based model or any new methodology;

Support the National Sustainability Manager and Human Rights Officer, Africa, in making recommendations and developing strategies to better promote and protect human rights, including children’s rights and womens rights;

Contribute to the integration of gender perspectives/considerations and specific issues relating to the rights of women/girls in all activities, programs and strategies;

 

 

Assist in the development, the coordination and implementation of the human rights work plan; evaluate or assist in the evaluation of one’s progress and suggest adjustments if necessary;

Help communities develop their community action plans (CAP) which will become a framework for the implementation of sustainable community development and child well-being activities;

Follow up with the team of consultants working on community development projects according to annual objectives;

Design an annual operational plan taking into account sustainability program commitments and operational constraints;

Ensure the quality of the implementation of activities (such as, income-generating activities for women and other activities consistent with Barry Callebaut’s theory of change);

Train and supervise coaches, manage their performance and help assess training needs while ensuring the proper execution of the training plan within the appropriate time frame.

 2. Monitoring, evaluation and learning

In collaboration with the Monitoring & Evaluation team, define the program’s evaluation and reporting indicators;

Propose or improve reporting standards;

Periodically report to the country’s sustainable development manager on the progress of the activities carried out.

3. Stakeholder management

Establish and maintain contacts with local authorities, civil society, UN agencies, the private sector and other relevant partners to promote and advance human rights, including through attacking the roots of child labor in the selected area and advising on strategic and policy issues to better protect and promote human rights;

Identify opportunities to form strategic partnerships with other organizations to support the implementation of community action plans, which enable more effective and efficient delivery of community programs and eliminate any unnecessary duplication of efforts.

 

About you:

A graduate university degree in a related field such as personal law, political science, international relations, development studies, social sciences, public administration, community psychology or a related field, or An undergraduate university degree combined with three (03) additional years of relevant experience;

Knowledge of and exposure to a range of issues relating to human rights and community development in cocoa growing communities in Cameroon, including approaches and techniques to address sensitive and complex human rights issues in their political, ethnic, racial, gender and socio-economic dimensions;

At least five (5) years of senior level experience in human rights/child protection, community development or closely related area, at least half of which in the area of ​​children’s rights and gender, are required;

Have good experience in the field of cocoa cultivation;

Demonstrate perseverance in the face of problems or challenges;

Proactivity, flexibility and attention to detail;

Computer skills (Word, Excel);

Bilingual, English and French (pidgin language is an added advantage);

Good command of Microsoft Excel;

Experience in business and financial planning;

Independence and ability to learn quickly, while being able to find the right stakeholders within the environment to improve the quality of the solution;

Experience in project management;

Experience in cocoa or other tropical products is a plus;

A driving license with driving experience in rural areas.
