UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.
Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.
And we never give up.
For every child, a chance in life!
In Cameroon, women of childbearing age are affected by anemia (40%), deficiencies: in zinc (77%), in vitamin B12 (29%), in folic acid (8%); 32% are overweight or obese and 7% underweight. Maternal undernutrition, and more particularly during pregnancy, contributes to maintaining the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition, infection and underdevelopment. Adequate maternal nutrition is important to ensure the well-being of mothers as well as the product of pregnancy and beyond.
In a recent study, eleven recommendations were identified in WHO documents on maternal nutrition. It shows that few recommendations are transcribed in Cameroon’s national documents and very few are implemented.
Indeed, a distinction is made between general recommendations (4) and those to be implemented in a specific context (7). They can be classified into two categories: dietary interventions (4) and micronutrient supplementation (7). Of the dietary interventions, one is partially adopted and implemented and one adopted but not implemented. For micronutrients two are adopted and implemented and one not adopted but implemented. Operationalizing maternal nutrition interventions requires clear guidelines.
It therefore appears necessary to revisit the international guidelines/recommendations, adopt them totally or partially to make them national guidelines/recommendations on maternal nutrition, also taking into account adolescent girls as a group with specific nutritional needs.
