Job Overview

Under the authority of the Project Director Mbam & Djerem, the Anti-Poaching Officer will provide technical assistance for anti-poaching and conservation activities and capacity building of law enforcement personnel in close collaboration with the park authorities. The position will support the development/updating and implementation of the anti-poaching strategy, supervise the activities planned within the framework defined by the government represented by the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife (MINFOF) and its various partners involved in the landscape.

 

 

 

Main responsibilities

– Ensure the planning, implementation and monitoring of anti-poaching actions (organization of patrols, compilation, assembly, analysis, securing and monitoring data relating to law enforcement, animation of the operations room and reports) in the project area;

– Lead the recruitment, training and management of law enforcement personnel in coordination with park authorities and the WCS project manager;

– Develop and monitor the intelligence and information system to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of real-time law enforcement;

– Raising awareness and strengthening prosecution procedures and the execution of legal sentences;

– Help develop and implement strategic and effective communications for law enforcement;

– Raise awareness and collaborate with the communities surrounding the park, to promote the sustainability of the protected area and ecological interconnection;

– Plan and coordinate wildlife conservation and protection activities in the park targeted by the intervention;

As part of anti-poaching activities and in general:

– Ensure the strict application and respect of the laws in force in the country, and the respect of international rules of human rights as well as the WCS code of conduct;

Support the anti-poaching department in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual technical reports according to donor requirements and WCS procedures, and generally provide administrative and financial support for conservation and anti-poaching;

– Other requests to support the implementation and proper functioning of the project.

Job requirements

– A minimum of 10 years of experience in a similar position;

– A commitment to work collegially with all staff, and professionally and diplomatically with all governmental and non-governmental partner organizations in a culturally diverse environment;

– Proven experience in developing and maintaining partnerships and one-on-one relationships in a complex environment;

– Good understanding of the institutional and legal framework of conservation as well as the relevant challenges and issues;

– Training and/or professional experience in the field of Conservation and biodiversity;

– Experience in Africa, and Central Africa in particular, is preferred, as well as the ability to work with and be sensitive to a diverse group of people, including different cultures, nationalities and backgrounds;

– Be in good physical condition to be able to carry out continuous educational activities, including physical fitness;

– Be able to evolve and work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team;

– Excellent spoken and written French (English is an asset);

– Good knowledge of the national and international legal framework for wildlife and protected areas;

– Experience with national prosecution procedures for wildlife crime;

– Proficiency in standard office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.). Good knowledge of GIS, SMART or EarthRanger will be appreciated.

-Excellent reporting, administrative and financial skills to support field operations and administrative follow-up;

– Advanced and updated qualifications in first aid and sports are an asset

– Flexibility, optimism, good humor, passion for excellence, motivation and ambition.
