Purpose of the post

Provide management of sports programs for development, using sport, physical education and physical activity as tools to achieve the aspirations of AU Agenda 2063 and promote quality sport.

Main functions

• Provide technical and intellectual support in the management of various aspects related to the area of ​​expertise;
• Identify best practices and monitor the effectiveness of the Office’s support to the AU;
• Assist in the development of strategies and the business continuity plan and participate in their implementation or ensure their implementation;
• Promote and ensure the implementation of initiatives related to the area of ​​specialization;
• Assist in the organization of thematic networks, consultations and meetings on development cooperation and international relations;
• Develop materials, deliver training and provide necessary support to organizational units as required;
• Provide technical advice on matters relating to the system review and implementation project in the area of ​​specialization, as required.

 

 

 

Specific responsibilities

• Develop and coordinate robust programs that advocate the use of sport, physical education, physical activity and recreation as a tool for inclusive socio-economic development to achieve the aspirations of AU Agenda 2063 ;
• Promote inclusive participation and empowerment through sport, physical education, physical activity and recreation for young people, girls, women, people with disabilities and people with special needs, as well as groups vulnerable and marginalized;
• Promote the development and mainstreaming of gender equality, inclusion, safeguarding, good governance and other policy frameworks in sport and alignment with the sustainable sport development policy in Africa;
• Play a leading role in promoting sustainable and massive access to physical activity, physical education, sport and leisure (sport for all);
• Coordinate the development and promotion of generic coach education and athlete development with the aim of developing high performance sport in Africa;
• Oversee the coordination and development of legal frameworks necessary for sport in Africa, in order to protect the interests of athletes and the development of sport in Africa;
• Set up programs and advocate for the local manufacture of sports equipment, sports entrepreneurship and the creation of jobs in the field of sport;
• Accomplish any other task that may be entrusted to him by the Coordinator.
University training and experience required

The candidate must hold a Master’s degree in sports management, sports sciences, physical education, or in a field related to sports or in social sciences, with relevant professional experience of at least seven ( 7) years in the field of sports for the development, management or administration of sports, physical education or sports training, including three (3) years in expert positions.

DURATION OF CONTRACT AND TAKING OFFICE:

Engagement in this position is on the basis of a regular contract for a period of 3 years, of which the first 12 months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract is renewable for a period of two years, subject to satisfactory results and achievements.

LANGUAGES:

Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages ​​(English, Arabic, Spanish, French, Portuguese). Knowledge of another AU language would be an added advantage.

COMPENSATION:

As an indication, the base salary for this position is US$37,453.00 (P3 Step 1) per year. This salary is supplemented by other emoluments, such as post adjustment (48% of base salary), housing allowance (US$18,396.00 per year), education grant (100 % tuition fees and other related costs up to a maximum of US$10,000 per child per year), for international civil servants and US$3,330 per child per year, for local civil servants.
