*Recruitment of one (01) Field Agent: Ecological monitoring of species and ecosystems*

Recruitment of one (01) Field Agent: Ecological monitoring of species and ecosystems
Work location: Salapoumbé, East Region Cameroon
Contract type: Fixed-term contract under local law
Salary: According to experience and Noé scale
Duration: 24 months, renewable depending on performance and available funding

1. Context
The conservation of ecosystems and the sustainable management of natural resources are
crucial issues for sustainable development in Cameroon. The South-East region of Cameroon, in

The periphery of Lobéké National Park (LNP), in particular, is home to exceptional biodiversity,
with key species such as elephants, gorillas, buffaloes and several species of
duiker.
However, this region faces several challenges, including:
 Poaching and wildlife crime, which threaten animal populations and the proper
functioning of ecosystems;
 Human-wildlife conflict, exacerbated by the expansion of human activities and the
scarcity of natural resources;
 Lack of community engagement, which limits the participation of
local populations in conservation efforts and natural resource management;
 The absence of structured ecological monitoring, making it difficult to assess the state of
ecosystems and the impacts of conservation interventions.
In this context, Noé, in partnership with Nature+, is implementing the project “NaturaSud-Est –
Conservation in Forest Management Units (UFA),
Hunting Interest Zones (ZIC), and Community-Managed Hunting Interest Zones (ZICGC) on
the outskirts of the National Park”. This project, funded by the European Union, aims to strengthen conservation

biodiversity and actively involve local communities in the sustainable management of
natural resources. The project focuses its work on the
following three Specific Objectives (SO):
 SO1: Improve the fight against poaching in the UFA/ZIC and ZICGC around the
Lobéké National Park and strengthen law enforcement on wildlife crime in the
landscape;
 SO2: Establish an ecological monitoring system on certain key species,
biological studies and a study on human/wildlife conflicts in
forestry and hunting concessions in the periphery of the LNP to monitor the evolution of biodiversity
and mitigate natural resource management conflicts;
 SO3: Strengthen the natural resource management capacities of
conservation stakeholders with a view to equitably sharing the benefits from the management of natural resources.

wildlife and forest resources, particularly benefiting women, youth and
indigenous peoples.
To achieve its objectives, Noé is looking for one (01) field agent in charge of the
Ecological Monitoring of Species and Ecosystems who would be based at the operational base in
the Eastern region (Lokomo/Salapoublé). He/She will be responsible for ensuring the implementation and
monitoring of activities, in accordance with the project action plan.
2. Objectives of the position
The field agent’s main mission will be to ensure the implementation and monitoring of
project activities in the field. He/She will work in close collaboration with
local communities, administrative and traditional authorities, as well as project partners. He/She
will contribute in particular to:
 The application of the action plan developed by the project team;
 The collection of data for ecological monitoring and adaptive management of the project;
 Supporting communities in the sustainable management of
natural resources;
 The implementation of two major campaigns to survey large and medium-sized
mammals. The method envisaged is a combination of linear transects on
foot (Distance Sampling) and camera traps (Camera Trap Distance
Sampling);
 The implementation of complementary studies on certain target species (bongo,
elephants, chimpanzees, etc.) such as capture-mark-recapture using

camera traps, the use of drones, environmental DNA collection,
bioacoustic sensors, GPS collars, etc.;
 Identification, formulation of management measures, and monitoring of areas with high
conservation values;
 Implementation of biodiversity monitoring systems at the landscape level;
 Support to ZIC, ZICGC and UFA teams in ecological monitoring (GPS, SMART,
Earth Ranger);
 Implementation and monitoring of the forest dynamics monitoring system at
the landscape level with the Nature + partner in coordination;
 Support for the dissemination and communication of results.
To the extent of his/her experience and skills, the field agent may be
required to provide occasional technical support to other activities (operations, anti-
poaching, community development) as well as to project monitoring and reporting.
3. Job Description
The Ecological Monitoring Field Agent is responsible for collecting and
analyzing data on biodiversity and ecosystems. Their work includes monitoring species,

habitat monitoring, use of scientific tools (GPS, drone, camera traps,
botanical surveys, etc.), and writing reports to guide conservation actions.
3.1. Responsibilities
In this position, the candidate’s main responsibilities will be to:
 Contribute to the establishment of an ecological monitoring system to assess the
evolution of animal populations and natural habitats;
 Carry out ecological inventories (large mammals, avifauna, flora, etc.) using
methods such as linear transects and camera traps
(Camera Trap Distance Sampling, capture-mark-recapture, etc.);
 Participate in an elephant collaring campaign;
 Collect and process data using specific tools (GPS, SMART, GIS) and
contribute to the analysis of the results;
 Participate in studies on the state of conservation of ecosystems and formulate
recommendations for their management;
 Ensure reporting and documentation of ecological monitoring activities;
 Train and support junior staff such as
team leaders, assistant team leaders and local stakeholders in
biodiversity monitoring techniques;
 Implement and participate in actions to restore
degraded ecosystems;
 Implement actions identified and validated by the project;
 Rigorously implement studies and analyses defined according to the
highest scientific standards;

line transects and camera traps. Knowledge of the use of
acoustic sensors and drones will be an asset as well as practical experience
with large mammal movement studies using GPS collars,
and environmental DNA collection;  Good knowledge of the SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool)
suite of tools or the ability to learn it quickly;  Proficiency in GIS tools (QGIS, ArcGIS) and software for analyzing wildlife inventory data (e.g. Distance Sampling, R) as well as camera trap data (e.g. Camera Base, Conservation AI);  Affinity with the use of the Office Pack and very good reporting skills;  Good interpersonal skills with practice of teamwork and networking, ability to report, inform and mobilize;  Accustomed to working in an isolated environment;  Be able to remain flexible, efficient, enthusiastic and diplomatic in a complex and demanding environment. 4.
